Blue hour on Tempe Town Lake

Mill Avenue Bridge, Tempe Town Lake, Tempe, AZ
Visiting six cities during the past three weeks has left me a bit travel-worn and woefully behind in my blog posting. But I’m energized after processing this recent shot I took during a photowalk arranged by Phoenix-based photographer Mike Olbinski (@MikeOlbinski). Mike generously organized the evening walk across the bridges of Tempe Town Lake and nearby environs. We had a good turnout for the walk and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and sharing conversation with photographers whom I follow on Twitter. As Mike pointed out, the real aim of the walks, aside of snapping some brackets, is to get to know each other a little better.

The bridges and shoreline of Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona are a great venue for golden and blue hour shots — that fleeting period during late afternoon and twilight when scenery comes alive. This long, single-exposure shot: 15 seconds, f/16, ISO 200, tripod (a must!) captures the magical shimmer of the Mill Avenue bridge lights in the water. Purely by accident, I caught the light streak from an approaching aircraft.

As I now reflect on this photo and great evening I shared with like-minded photographers, I see this bridge imbued with greater significance. For me, it represents the link between online community and face-to-face fellowship. Thanks again, Mike for making this wonderful outing possible. This is just dreamy Chris. You’ve wrapped the bridge in shades of blue and gold and kept our eyes focused within the frame with that extraordinary jet light trail. It sounds as though the whole evening was a memorable experience!

That’s beautiful Chris, so serene and calming, the colours are so gentle and the jet trail is reminiscent of a shooting star – luscious.
